Etymology

First attested as Cl. Medhuysen in 1491. Calque of West Frisian Lyts Midhuzen, derived from lyts (small, little) and a compound of Old Frisian mid (mid-, middle) and the plural form of hūs (house). The element klein was added to distinguish the settlement from Groot Medhuizen.
