Etymology edit

Borrowed from Central Kurdish پێشمەرگە (pêşmerge). The use of -a for the final vowel is probably influenced by other European languages (including English) where this is done to avoid a fronted pronunciation of the letter -g-. The Kurdish vowel is the same in the last two syllables (phonetically [æ]).

Pronunciation edit

  • IPA(key): /pɛʃˈmɛrɡa/, /ˌpeːʃ-/
  • Audio:(file)

Noun edit

Peschmerga m (strong, genitive Peschmergas or Peschmerga, plural Peschmerga or Peschmergas or Peschmergen or Peschmerge)

  1. Peshmerga (Kurdish fighter)

Usage notes edit

  • The form Peschmerge seems to be somewhat more common in the plural than the singular, meaning that there is probably a false belief among some language users that it is a plural form (likely based on the Italian plural formation as in pizzapizze).
