Etymology edit

Borrowed from French protégé.

Pronunciation edit

  • IPA(key): /ˌpʁoːteˈʒeː/, /ˌpʁɔteˈʒeː/
  • (file)
  • Rhymes: -eː

Noun edit

Protegé m (strong, genitive Protegés, plural Protegés)

  1. (chiefly learned) protégé
    Synonyms: Günstling, Klient, Mündel, Schützling

Usage notes edit

  • German Protegé has a negative connotation of nepotism and corruption (like Günstling). The word Schützling may be somewhat more neutral, though it is not free of this connotation either. Klient can be used instead, unless the mentor works in the same company or organisation as the protégé.
