Etymology

edit

Prósper derives this from Proto-Indo-European *dʰéh₁es-yos (the base being a neuter s-stem), from *dʰeh₁- (to do (a ritual act)) +‎ *-yós (genitive adjective suffix). It would be formed identically to Ancient Greek θεῖος (theîos) and Latin fēriae.[1]

De Vaan and Beekes'[2][3] derivation of the Latin and Greek words from from *dʰéh₁s (god) +‎ *-yós (genitive adjective suffix) is also unproblematic for the Celtic term.
