From Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰengʰ- (“to walk, step”). Cognate with Sanskrit जंगहे (jaṃgahe) (third-person singular intensive form of जंहति (jaṃhati, “to move quickly, sprawl, kick”)) and Lithuanian žeñgti (“to step”).
