From Proto-Indo-European *ǵnibʰ-néh₂-ti, an iterative verb from Proto-Indo-European *ǵneybʰ- (to pinch) which also gave rise to the strong verb *knīpaną. Compare Lithuanian gnýbti, žnýbti (to pinch).[1]
