Uncertain. According to Vladimir Orel, possibly a derived term formed from the root of Ancient Greek σβέννῡμι (sbénnūmi, I extinguish, quench), Proto-Slavic *gasìti (to extinguish), Lithuanian gèsti (to extinguish), Sanskrit जासयति (jāsáyati, to exhaust, weaken).
