editUncertain. According to Vladimir Orel, possibly a derived term formed from the root of Ancient Greek σβέννῡμι (sbénnūmi, “I extinguish, quench”), Proto-Slavic *gasìti (“to extinguish”), Lithuanian gèsti (“to extinguish”), Sanskrit जासयति (jāsáyati, “to exhaust, weaken”).
