editFrom Proto-Indo-European *lewbʰ-, *lewb- (“to peel, break, damage”), from Proto-Indo-European *lew- (“to cut, remove, prune, separate”). Sense of love potion influenced by similar forms from unrelated *lubō (“love”). Cognate with Irish luibh (“herb”).
