From earlier *-ejō, from Proto-Indo-European *-éyeti (causative) in which the first person singular ended in *-éyoh₂. Cognate with Proto-Germanic *-janą, Proto-Balto-Slavic *-éiˀtei (whence Proto-Slavic *-iti).
