From Proto-Balto-Slavic *(s)kersas, from Proto-Indo-European *(s)kert-. Cognate with Lua error: bad argument #1 to 'toNFD' (string expected, got nil), Lithuanian sker̃sas (“transverse, cross”), Old Prussian kērscha, kirscha (“transverse, cross”).
