Etymology edit
From Proto-Balto-Slavic *kerslá. Equivalent to *čersti + *-slo.
Cognate with Lithuanian ker̃slas (“cutter”) (kir̃sti, kertù), Old Prussian kersle (“pickaxe, axe with 2 blades”). Also compare Lithuanian kirkšnìs/kìrkšnis (“hip joint”), Latvian cir̂ksnis (“groin”) or Latvian šķerslis or Gothic 𐌷𐌰𐌹𐍂𐌸𐍂𐌰 (hairþra), Old High German hërdar or Latin culter, cultrum.
For the meaning compare French taille (“waist”), Italian taglia (< Latin taliāre (“to cut”)).
