From Proto-Balto-Slavic *gedḗˀtei, an essive of Proto-Indo-European *gʷʰedʰ- (to yearn, to pray for). Nasal infix apparently influenced by synonymous *žędati. Cognate with Lithuanian gedė́ti (to mourn).
