Etymology

Obsolete nominal suffix, derived from *-okъ +‎ *-jь, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *-kyós. Equivalent to *-čь, appended to o-stems. Encountered mainly in South Slavic.

Survives as an adverb in *per +‎ *-očь > Old Church Slavonic прочь (pročĭ, “forth”), проче (proče, “therefore”).

1. From nouns or participles, forms state nouns with expressive, pungent connotation

   Synonyms: *-ostь, *-ota

   *gňilъ (“rotten”) → *gňilоčь (“rot”)

   *morzъ (“frost”) → *morzočь (“iciness”)

2. From verbs in *-ati, forms expressive state nouns

   Synonym: *-otьja

   *bľьvati (“to spit”) → *bľьvоčь (“vomit”)

   *brъkati (“to stir”) → *brъkоčь (“mess”)
