Proto-Slavic edit

Etymology edit

From Proto-Balto-Slavic *krū́ˀtei, from Proto-Indo-European *krewH- (possibly *(s)krewH-). Likely akin to Proto-Balto-Slavic *kráuˀtei, whence Lithuanian kráuti (to store), Latvian kraũt (to pile, to stack). Probably further related to Ancient Greek κρύπτω (krúptō, I hide, cover, conceal, obscure), Proto-Germanic *hreudaną (to cover, to adorn), possibly Proto-Germanic *hraukaz (pile, heap), Old Irish crúach. Compare also Proto-Germanic *skrūdą (shroud, cover).

Verb edit

*krỳti impf (perfective *krỳvati)[1][2][3]

  1. to cover, to hide
  2. (reflexive) (+ *sę) to hide, to be under cover
