Probably from Proto-Indo-European *(s)pond-éye-ti, causative/iterative from *(s)pend- (to stretch). Cognate with Lithuanian spándyti (to stretch), German spannen (to stretch), Lithuanian spą́stas (traps), spę́sti (to set traps) (1sg. spéndžiu), Latvian spôsts (trap, snare).
