Per Derksen, unclear; possibly related to Ancient Greek πάλλω (pállō, to sway, to swing), from Proto-Indo-European *pelh₁-; compare Homeric παλλομένη κραδίην (palloménē kradíēn, with pounding heart). Also unclear is the origin of the underlying *x < Proto-Indo-European *s.
