From Proto-Balto-Slavic *sḗˀmen, from Proto-Indo-European *séh₁mn̥. Cognates include Lithuanian sė́muo and Gothic 𐌼𐌰𐌽𐌰𐍃𐌴𐌸𐍃 (manasēþs, human flock, literally: human seed).
