Etymology edit

From *vyti (to howl) +‎ *-kati. Cognate with Latvian ūkšuot (to shout), Lithuanian ūkáuti, ū́kčioti (to call, to evoke), Proto-Germanic *auhjōną (to make noise).

Similar to Russian ау́кать (aúkatʹ, to shout "auh!"), formed in the same manner from the interjection ау (au, wow, wail).
