From Proto-Germanic *aiskaz, nominalized from a secondary full-grade of unattested *iskaną, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂is-sḱé-ti, from *h₂eys- (to request) +‎ *-sḱéti. Cognate with Proto-Slavic *jьskati (to look for, seek), Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hišćáti (to wish, desire).
