Etymology edit
From Proto-Germanic *aiskaz, nominalized from a secondary full-grade of unattested *iskaną, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂is-sḱé-ti, from *h₂eys- (“to request”) + *-sḱéti. Cognate with Proto-Slavic *jьskati (“to look for, seek”), Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hišćáti (“to wish, desire”).
