Etymology edit

From Middle High German schirlinc, with irregular raising from older scherlinc, from Old High German skerling, itself with dissimilation from older skerning. Cognate with Dutch scheerling. Derived from Proto-Germanic *skarną (dung) due to the plant’s preferred habitat. Compare dialectal English sharn.
