Etymology

From Middle High German schirlinc, with irregular raising from older scherlinc, from Old High German skerling, itself with dissimilation from older skerning. Cognate with Dutch scheerling. Derived from Proto-Germanic *skarną (dung) due to the plant’s preferred habitat. Compare dialectal English sharn.
