editEarly 20th century, deverbal from Low German schnorgeln, snörgeln (“to snore, snuffle”, attested 19th century). So called because of the stertorous sound. Related to schnarchen (“to snore”). Doublet of obsolete Schnörchel (“a certain disease of pigeons”).
