Etymology edit

First attested as Topweer in 1781. Compound of an unclear first element and Old Frisian were (parcel, landed property). The first element may be a familiar form of Old Frisian Theudobald (a personal name) or derive from Dutch Low Saxon top (first cut of mown grass).
