- ^ The name is said to come from the old German words lureln (Rhine dialect for "murmuring") and ley (Celtic for "rock"), likely meaning "murmuring rock". Other theories for the first part include OHG. Lur, connected with modern Ger. lauern, "to lurk," as per the 1911 Encyclopædia Britannica,[1] and OHG. luen "to see, submerge," as per the Japanese Wikipedia.[2] Why not include still another theory that would better mean "singing" than "murmuring" or "echoing"?
