Kostas Kazazis "The Status of Turkisms in the Present-Day Balkan Languages" in Aspects of the Balkan: Continuity and Change, pg. 97: "Thus, the Macedonian expression od kade na kade? 'why, for what reason?…' (literally 'from where to where?') is modelled on Turkish nereden nereye 'for some reason or other; I don't quite know why' … also … Greek από πού κι ως πού …"

But I am not sure how, if something has a meaning which is the same as its literal meaning, it can be said to be etymologically derived from something which seems phonetically totally different. How do you do? could be said to be modelled on τι κάνετε; but is that the same as being etymologically derived from it?

Shouldn't there be a phonetic chain of changes showing how the word/phrase has been arrived at? —Saltmarsh^{απάντηση} 05:22, 22 April 2010 (UTC)

It's called a 'calque' or 'loan translation'. A famous example of this is the French gratte-ciel (lit. scrape-sky), meaning 'skyscraper', which is a calque of the English. Gratte-ciel, for example, does list the English 'model' as it's etymological origin. Not only is listing the calqued model traditional, it is extremely helpful when one considers that the purpose of etymology is to describe the social history of a word. I have added your old etym to the literal translation. As regards the calque derivation - since it is made up of such everyday words - and means what it says - I suspect that linguists might argue the point. Template:de-noun

Could you possibly use {{de-noun}} for German nouns? Also German nouns start with capital letters. Mglovesfun (talk) 23:49, 19 May 2011 (UTC)

This is something to be careful about. This is what should go under ===Noun===. {{de-noun-m}} is for use under ====Declension==== and requires more parameters to work properly. (Martin, adding g=m didn't fix it either. The plural shown is incorrect.)

Excuse me? I'm going to be banned because I 'format shit poorly'? I changed all of my work as soon as I was notified I was doing it incorrectly. It 'continued' because I added about twenty words or something yesterday in one sitting. Back the fuck off. I'm adding to Wiktionary's pool of information, trying to follow the caprices of each language I add words under. Some of these words, btw, are not even in leo, making them extremely useful for non-native speakers. I'm going to be banned after I went back and fixed everything? Just a note, I have fixed this entry but I would appreciate if you could fix your [Special:Contributions/CMEHalverson|other contributions]] accordingly; most importantly, every entry needs a headword-line template (like {{head|wo|noun}}).
