Pronunciation

Hi, thanks for your continuing contributions.

When adding IPA pronunciations, please could you indicate where these are used. Most pronunciations are not universal. See, for example, my changes to supplant. Thanks. — Paul G 11:20, 10 February 2006 (UTC)

Suffixes

I have received your message. Other users have identified "-based", "-backed", "-on-demand" as suffixes in the main header. You mean that these articles preceeded by hyphens but usable by themselves alone should be English combining forms but not suffixes, right? Thanks for your advice and I will correct them accordingly. I have received your message again. You just said: "Some Wiktionarian has already put in a lot of work carefully distinguishing between narrow-definition suffixes and broad-definition suffixes ("combining forms"). It would be a shame to throw out all that person's work." There are others who have not distinguished them. We should better have a uniform way or edit wars can happen. Wiktionary:Entry layout explained helps unify the formats. See also Wiktionary:Be bold in updating pages.

Columns

Hi. The problem at rose was that the columns needed a double "|}" at the end, whilst the bottom template now contains only one. The one solution is to use the templates {{top3}} and {{mid3}} instead of the manual syntax. These are prefered in the derived or related terms sections, as the coloured columns are actually to be used only in the translations section. New definitions and translations

Hey, Keffy. When you add a new definition to a word (as you did on steal), please make sure you update the assignment (i.e. numbering) of translations, synonyms, antonyms, etc.

Audio uploads

Keffy, I see you've begun on your campaign to upload vast numbers of pronunciations. If you have an automated way to upload audio, perhaps we could team up for human-recorded audio. I've got my audio upload process to a point where it's pretty quick, under a minute to record, upload, and link, but that's still a lot when attempting thousands of words.

The next time we're both around on IRC, perhaps we could experiment with automated uploading. I'd be glad to record audio in bulk, if we could upload it in bulk, too. Aside from the heteronyms, I see no reason that the upload process couldn't be automated, but I'm no programmer. Let me know. --Dvortygirl 07:15, 23 March 2006 (UTC)

Phonemics & Phonetics

Good to know. Keep in mind that the rest of us generally don't keep up with the specialized literature and may use terms in a less precise, less technical sense. Once the name of "AHD" is settled, the next major step is reaching a concensus on how we use "AHD" & IPA/SAMPA, while creating a pronunciation guide page for each system with explanation, each of which includes a general statement concerning use of the system. Re: Ergative verbs

Feel free to do whatever you like with the ergative tags, I'm sure if one knows the code well enough one can even edit the template to make them invis but still have them add the category. :) The only reason I made the tag was I realized it could be confusing to list something like "play" as ergative, where one sense is ergative and others are definitely not. You may be right though, that anyone advanced enough at English is probably advanced enough to figure that out on their own. Maybe instead we could put a note on the category page saying something like "some of these verbs are only ergative in certain senses and not in others". Thanks for your vigilance :-)

Frequency lists as document?

Dear Keffy, I am a Swedish artist working with an art project, where I would need a good word frequency list (for a database). The one you uploaded on Wiktionary is the best one that I have found. Your account will be renamed
