Your native variety of Mindong

Just wondering, are you from Seri Manjung, or are you from Sitiawan? For the dialect tables, we'd like to pinpoint the location to the city if possible, instead . The dog2 (talk) 15:19, 7 July 2022 (UTC)

Actually, I'm from Selangor. The data I get irl is from people who live or have lived in Sitiawan (town). I put "Manjung" because I expect to get data from places near Sitiawan (town) such as Seri Manjung and Ayer Tawar. Although all these places are part of Sitiawan (mukim), I chose to use "Manjung" and not "Sitiawan" as "Sitiawan" usually refers to the town and not the mukim. If we were to change "Manjung" to "Sitiawan", I suggest that we, in some way, should state that "Sitiawan" refers to the mukim as a whole and not just Sitiawan town.
Edit: I'm actually not sure which mukim Seri Manjung belongs to, but by comparing Google Maps and this map, I think it's in both Lumut and Sitiawan. NameName233 (talk) 02:05, 9 July 2022 (UTC)

@The dog2: After reflecting on this, I have come to the conclusion that we should discontinue the usage of "Manjung". I originally chose to use "Manjung" instead of "Sitiawan" (mukim) because:
1. I assumed that people will think of Sitiawan town instead of Sitiawan mukim. However, this may be untrue, as people often consider Ayer Tawar as a part of Sitiawan. In other words, for most people, "Sitiawan" may refer to the mukim and not the town.
2. I wanted to have a bigger pool to get data from. Using "Manjung" instead of "Sitiawan" would allow me to include data from other mukims. However, I now believe that we should not merge data from other mukims with data from Sitiawan as the towns in other mukims are quite far. According to Google Maps,
i. Lumut (city) is 21.4 km from Ayer Tawar, 11.8 km from Sitiawan (town)
ii. Segari is 28.5 km from Ayer Tawar, 20.7 km from Sitiawan (town)
iii. Changkat Keruing is 20.5 km from Ayer Tawar, 26.8 km from Sitiawan (town)
iv. Beruas (town) is 26.2 km from Ayer Tawar, 37.2 km from Sitiawan (town)
We have separate entries for Kuching and Sungai Tapang, which are only 7.9 km apart, as well as Senai and Kulai, which are 16.1 km apart (using the coordinates at Module:zh/data/dial). Moreover, we will most likely not get any data from the mukim of Lekir as there were only 45 Chinese people living there when the 2010 Malaysian census was taken (see page 350/484).

So far, all of the data I've added under "Manjung-MD-GT" are from Sitiawan mukim. Thus, we can either deprecate "Manjung-MD-GT" and replace it with "Sitiawan-MD-GT", or rename "Manjung (Gutian)" to "Sitiawan (Gutian)", but leave the code as "Manjung-MD-GT". What do you think? Well, we can have separate data points for the different town. So we can keep Manjung to refer to Seri Manjung, and if you know people from Sitiawan, you can add a separate data point for that. @Justinrleung What do you think?

By the way, if you have friends from Sarawak, it would be good if we can have the data points for Sibu, Miri and Bintulu too. The dog2 (talk) 12:32, 7 September 2022 (UTC)

I think there are two things I need clarification on:

1. I'm confused as to where Seri Manjung is because the map on Wikipedia (File:Map of Manjung District, Perak.svg) doesn't show Seri Manjung in the Manjung District.
2. Is the variety spoken in Seri Manjung different enough from the variety spoken in Sitiawan?

If they need to be separated, I think we should deprecate "Manjung-MD-GT" and replace it with "Sitiawan-MD-GT" (and use "Seri Manjung-MD" when we have data for Seri Manjung). — justin(r)leung _{{ (t...) | c=› }} 14:49, 7 September 2022 (UTC)

@justinrleung:

1. Seri Manjung is about 3 to 5 km southwest from Sitiawan.

2. I doubt there'd be any difference between the variety spoken in Seri Manjung and Sitiawan since they are close enough for travelling. NameName233 (talk) 15:16, 7 September 2022 (UTC)

In that case, I say deprecate "Manjung-MD-GT" for now, and replace it with "Sitiawan-MD-GT", since the people who are telling you these terms are from Sitiawan. @Justinrleung:: Would you agree? The dog2 (talk) 15:27, 8 September 2022 (UTC)
