From Malay abdas, from Classical Malay ابدس (abdas), from Classical Persian آبدست (ābdast) of آب (āb, “water”) + دست (dast, “hand”).[1] Cognate of Javanese ꦲꦧ꧀ꦢꦱ꧀ (abdas), Sundanese ᮃᮘ᮪ᮓᮞ᮪ (abdas).
