editInherited from Old Swedish biærgha, bærgha, from Old Norse bjarga, from Proto-Germanic *berganą, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰergʰ-. Cognate of Icelandic bjarga, Gothic 𐌱𐌰𐌹𐍂𐌲𐌰𐌽 (bairgan), German bergen, Old English beorgan.
