Etymology edit
Uncertain. Possibly from Proto-Indo-European *bʰerǵʰ- (“height”). Cognate to Ancient Greek πύργος (púrgos, “tower”), German Berg (“mountain”). The final velar might have arisen from an earlier singularized plural *birgje (cf. breg ~ brigje), which was later devoiced, although this is speculation.
Noun edit
berq m (plural berqe, definite berqi, definite plural berqet)
