editFrom Proto-Slavic *buřa, akin to Bulgarian and Russian буря (burja), Serbo-Croatian bura, Slovak búrka and búrať (“to crush”). Non-Slavic cognates include Old Norse byrr (“fair wind”), Latin furō (“I rage, rave”), Sanskrit भुरति (bhurati, “to stir, palpitate”).
