editFrom Proto-Tai *ɡapᴰ (“tight; narrow”), possibly from Middle Chinese 狹 (MC heap, “narrow”) (which became Doublet of kẹp). Cognate with Northern Thai ᨣᩢ᩠ᨷ, Lao ຄັບ (khap), Lü ᦅᧇ (kab), Tai Dam ꪁꪚꪾ, Shan ၵပ်ႉ (kâ̰p), Zuojiang Zhuang kaep, Thai คับ (káp).
