Etymology

Calque from Chinese 新自由主義／新自由主义 (tân tự do chủ nghĩa).

From chủ nghĩa (“ideology”) +‎ tân tự do (“new freedom”); it results from parsing 新自由主義 as 新自由 and 主義 and so means literally, “ideology of new freedom”.

Meanwhile, parsing 新自由主義 as 新 and 自由主義 yields its cognate and synonym chủ nghĩa tự do mới, which means literally, “new ideology of freedom; new liberalism”.

     Trong chủ nghĩa tự do cổ điển, thương nhân chỉ đơn giản yêu cầu nhà nước ‘để chúng tôi tự lo liệu lấy’ – laissez-nous faire. Song chủ nghĩa tân tự do thừa nhận rằng nhà nước cần phải chủ động trong việc tổ chức nền kinh tế thị trường.      In classical liberalism, merchants simply asked the state to ‘leave us alone’ – to laissez-nous faire. Neoliberalism recognised that the state must be active in the organisation of a market economy. The conditions allowing for a free market must be won politically, and the state must be re-engineered to support the free market on an ongoing basis.
