Etymology 1 edit

From Proto-Vietic *k-toːʔ (“trace, footprint”); compare North Central Vietnamese đấu, Chut [Rục] kataw³ and Arem dawˀ. The meaning "tone" is due to the fact that tones are usually marked with diacritics.
