ddim
- negative particle: Soft mutation of dim.
- Dw i ddim yn hoffi coffi.
- I don’t like coffee.
Usage notes edit
The negative particle dim occurs as its soft mutation ddim when it appears directly after the subject of the sentence, which is very often. Colloquially the mutated form ddim is found also at the beginning of a clause, as in Ddim o gwbl! (“Not at all!”).
dim/ddim can be reduced to 'm in colloquial speech.
When immediately followed by the definite article y/yr or any other definite noun phrase, ddim is replaced by mo (itself a contraction of ddim o (“nothing of”)):
- Hoffais i ddim moron. ― I didn't like carrots [in general].
- Hoffais i mo'r moron. ― I didn't like the carrots.
- Hoffais i mo foron dy fam. ― I didn't like your mother's carrots.
