EtymologyEdit

From Proto-Baltic *gem-, from Proto-Indo-European *gʷem-(to go, to come, to step), from which also dzemdēt(to give birth) (q.v.). From the zero grade form *gʷm̥- comes Latvian dzimt(to be born) (q.v.). Cognates include Lithuanian gimda.[1]
