förege (present föreger, preterite föregav, supine föregett, imperative förege)

  1. to cite, to claim (as a reason)
    Han föregav sjukdom som skäl till sin frånvaro
    He cited illness as the reason for his absence
    Vid de kontroversiella operationerna föregavs massförstörelsevapen tillverkas i byggnaderna
    During the controversial operations, weapons of mass destruction were said to be manufactured in the buildings
  2. (passive voice) to be said, to be claimed (more generally)
    Han föregavs vara hennes systerson, men var troligtvis hennes älskare
    He was said to be her nephew, but was probably her lover
  3. (reflexive) to claim (of oneself, more generally)
    Han föregav sig vara oäkta son till konungen
    He claimed to be an illegitimate son of the king
  4. (in the past participle "föregiven") supposed, purported, alleged (like above, usually implying strong skepticism)
    Deras föregivet opartiska undersökningar verkar alltid stödja deras egen ståndpunkt
    Their supposedly impartial investigations always seem to support their own position
