From Javanese ꦒꦧꦃ (gabah), from Old Javanese gabah, probably from Proto-Mon-Khmer *ɓaʔ (paddy). Compare Temiar baa (rice plants, husked rice), Semai ba (rice), Proto-Khasian *kba (paddy rice).
