Inherited from Proto-Slavic *grędà,[1] from Proto-Balto-Slavic *grindā́ˀ,[1] from Proto-Indo-European *gʰrn̥dʰ-éh₂, from the root *gʰrendʰ- (beam, plank).[1] Cognates include Czech hřada (perch),[1] Serbo-Croatian гре́да/gréda (beam),[1] Russian гряда́ (grjadá, ridge; bed of flowers),[1] Latvian grīda (floor)[1] and Old Icelandic grind (lattice).[1]
