From Proto-Italic *hostos, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰós-tos (“hand”), from *ǵʰes- (“hand”). Cognate with Sanskrit हस्त (hásta, “hand”), Avestan 𐬰𐬀𐬯𐬙𐬀 (zasta, “hand”). Related to Latin hostia (“victim”).
