editCompound of ilmu (“science”) + alam (“nature”), calque of Dutch natuurkunde (“physics”, literally “nature science”) and Dutch natuurwetenschap (“natural science”).
- The sense of natural science is reinforced by semantic loan from English natural science.
- The sense of physics was displaced by fisika.
