From Proto-Hmong-Mien *qluwX (“dog”). Cognate with White Hmong dev and Western Xiangxi Miao [Fenghuang] guoud, [Jiwei] ghuoud. Compare Chinese 狗 (OC *Cə.kˤroʔ), which is probably a HM loan in Chinese.
