From Proto-Finnic *kapja + -o (compare dialectal kapia). Ultimately borrowing from Germanic. Cognate to Estonian kabi, Votic kabjõ.

kavio refers to the hoof of an odd-toed ungulate. The hoof of an even-toed ungulate (cloven hoof) is sorkka in Finnish.
