Tocharian B edit

Etymology edit

Uncertain, possibly from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰórtos (enclosure), which would be cognate to Latin hortus (garden), Proto-Celtic *gortos (enclosure, field), and Ancient Greek χόρτος (khórtos, farmyard). Alternatively, from Proto-Indo-European *gʰerdʰ- (enclosure, to enclose), which would be cognate to English yard, garden, Proto-Slavic *gordъ (fortification, castle), etc. Both are ultimately from *ǵʰer- (to enclose), in any case.
