editFrom Proto-Baltic *kerp-, from Proto-Indo-European *kerp- (“to pluck, harvest”), a form of Proto-Indo-European *(s)ker- (“to cut, chop”). Cognate with Latvian cìrpt (“to shave”), Proto-Slavic *čerpti (“to scoop, draw (water, etc.)”), Latin carpo (“to seize”), and, from *(s)ker-, a multitude of other derivatives.[1]
