Inherited from Ottoman Turkish قولاق آصمق (ḳulaḳ aṣmaḳ, to lend an ear, to listen),[1] equivalent to compound of kulak (ear) +‎ asmak (to hang, to let loose), literally to hang (one's) ear. Cognate with Kazakh құлақ асу (qūlaq asu).
