Borrowed from Korean 구결(口訣) (gugyeol), from Middle Chinese 口訣 (MC kʰəuX kwet̚, “mnemonic rhyme”), from (kǒu, mouth) +‎ (jué, rhymed saying).

The spelling comes from the Yale romanization of kwūkyel.
