Possibly from Gothic *𐌻𐌰𐌹𐍄𐍄𐌿𐌲 (*laittug, “lead rope”), from Proto-Germanic *laidtugą (compare Old English lāttēh (“leading rein”)), from *laidijaną (“to lead”) + *tugą (“cord, rope”).
