Etymology edit
Several etymologies have been proposed:
- From Sanskrit माष (māṣa, “particular weight of gold”). Compare to Bengali মাস্ (maś).
- From Pre-Angkorian Old Khmer mās ~ mas (“gold”), from Proto-Mon-Khmer *jmaas, an infixed form of *jaas (“to shine”). Compare Old Mon yimās (“shining (gold)”) and yās (“dawn; to shine”).
