    • 1786, Francis Grose, A Treatise on Ancient Armour and Weapons, page 52:
      A mawle of lead five feet long, and a pike with the same hanging by a girdle with a hook, is recommended by Ralph Smith for the arms of an archer, it has been quoted at length, under the article of the long bow.
