From Middle English milwell (amid many other forms), from Anglo-Norman meluel (amid other forms) and Old French moluel, probably from moruel, from Old Breton mor (sea) (from Proto-Brythonic *mor) + Old French lus and luz (pike, [as sea-luce] hake) + -el (diminutive suffix).[1]
